HENRY YOUNG; c.1840 -1911

We know from census returns that Henry was born in Berkhamsted in about 1839, but we are not able to identify his family with any certainty as two Henry Youngs were born in the town, one in 1839 and one in 1841and it is not possible to identify which of the two is the one with whom we are concerned.

Henry became a Dock Constable. The London Dock opened in Wapping in 1805 and the Dock Company Police Force was formed to police the dockyard. In 1864 the Dock Company Police Force was merged with the Metropolitan Police.[1]

In or about 1860 Henry married Sarah Harding. Sarah was from Chesham. The couple were to have ten children together.[2] The family lived in Tower Hamlets[3] and later Preston Road, Poplar, London[4].

At some time between 1891 and 1901 Henry retired from the dock police and moved back toBerkhamsted with his family. Henry’s wife, Sarah, died in the first quarter of 1901 in Berkhamsted and was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery.

At the time of the 1901 census Henry was living with his children, Harry, Lily, Mary, Annie and Rose, together with Rose’s husband, Edwin Fisher, at 30 Kitsbury Road. Harry, unmarried, was working as a grocer’s porter.

Henry died in 1911.
