Biography:
James Reynolds
1859 –1934

Unmarked grave James Reynolds (1859-1934)

James was born in 1859 in Chesham, the son of Daniel and Esther Reynolds. His father was a cattle dealer and James was the seventh of their eight children. In 1861 the family lived at Little Brockhurst, Lye Green, Chesham.

By 1881 Daniel and Esther had moved to a shop in Castle Street, Berkhamsted with their daughter Alice and sons James and Ernest. Daniel was a general dealer with Alice helping him in the shop, Ernest was a grocer and James a coal merchant.

In April 1887 James married Fanny Norris in Berkhamsted Congregational church and in 1891 they lived in King’s Road with Herbert, born in 1888 and Edith, born 1890. At the time of the census Fanny was expecting baby Sidney and a monthly nurse was already in residence to help her after the birth. James was prosperous enough to also employ a domestic servant.

Frank was born in 1893, followed by Stanley (1895), Winifred (1897) and Dorothy (1899).

The 1901 census reveals that James was, by then, a job master as well as a coal merchant, hiring out horses and carriages. The family was at 12, Kings Road and 13 year old Herbert was working as a draper’s apprentice.

Ten years later the couple were still at the same address. Edith, employed by the County Council as a teacher, was living at home, as were Stanley a “learner” at the Post Office, Winifred and Dorothy.

In 1921 the census shows James, a job master; Dorothy, out of work from her employment as a clerk with the Inland Revenue, and a female boarder living at 12, Kings Road. Fanny was visiting a family in Reading at the time.

James died in December 1934 aged 75 at 14, Kings Road and Fanny and Winfred were recorded at that address in the 1939 Register.
