James Thorne
Unmarked grave James Thorne (1839-1917)
James was born in 1839 in Aston Clinton, Bucks, the son of Elijah Thorne, labourer.
He also became a labourer and married Mildred Warring 18 November 1861 in Buckland, Bucks. They settled in Buckland where William was born in 1863, followed by, Annie (1865), Elizabeth (1867) and Margaret (1869).
By 1871 James was the licensee of the Bricklayer’s Arms, Western Road, Tring. (Western Road is the B4635, continuing the High Street. In the attached image the Britannia Inn which is in the background still stands at the junction of Western Road and Park Road, but is no longer a pub. The Bricklayer’s Arms has been demolished.)
Sydney was born in 1872, followed by Henrietta (1875) and Agnes E (1877).
By 1881 the family was living in Ravens Lane, Berkhamsted, and James was a gardener.
Blanche V W their final child was born in 1884.
The 1891 census shows them still in Ravens Lane and James was a kitchen gardener.
By 1911 they were living at 17, Bridge Street. James died in April 1917 in the Union Infirmary aged 77.
