Biography:
Jane Draper

Jane Draper

Unmarked grave Jane Draper (née Price) (1882-1947)
Jane was born in Leavesden, Watford, 10 November 1882, the daughter of Robert Price, a general labourer who had been born in Cheshire, and his wife Mary Ann who had been born in Radlett. The couple had moved to Leavesden in about 1882 after the birth of their eldest daughter. Jane and her two younger brothers were all born in Leavesden.
Jane became a domestic servant and in 1901 the census records her employed at the home of diamond merchant Henry Bisshopp and his family at “Park View”, Shrublands Road.
On 28 June 1902 she married Arthur Draper, a labourer, and they were to have five children:
Ernest Arthur (1903), Edward Thomas (1905/6), Margaret Lilian (1911), William Robert (1914) and Hilda Loos (1915)
In 1911 they were living in Unity Cottages.
Almost immediately on the outbreak of war, in August 1914, Arthur signed up for the Army and served throughout the war. Immediately on discharge he joined the RAF and served in Egypt in the stores department. By that time Jane and the family were living at 38, Highfield Road where they were recorded in the 1921 Census. Edward, William and Hilda were at home while Ernest, 18 and an unemployed roundsman/messenger for a butcher, was living with his aunt Sarah Draper in Kitsbury Road.
It must have been very stressful when Alfred was discharged from the RAF Reserves with cancer in 1924, but fortunately he recovered and was to live for another 22 years.
The 1939 Register records Jane and William living with her married daughter Hilda and her husband Charles Groom, a labourer. William was also a labourer, but is shown as a “Full-time fireman”. Arthur, meanwhile, was lodging in Watford. It would seem that the couple had parted as he died in Watford in 1946. Arthur is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.
Jane died in 1946 aged 65.
