Jane Winfield
1856 –1928

Unmarked grave Jane Winfield (née Wesley) (1856-1928)

Jane was born in 1856 at Cook’s Wharf, Cheddington.

She married labourer James Winfield 1875 Berkhamsted. They were to have fifteen children.

William was born in 1876, followed by Elizabeth (1878) and Sarah Ann (1879). Jane worked as a straw plaiter making plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry. This was home work that would have allowed her flexibility to look after her growing family.

In 1881 the family lived at Canal Side, Berkhamsted where Mary Ann was born and died that year. Edith Annie was born in 1883 but died in 1886, the year George was born. Sadly he too died in infancy in 1887. Mary Ann was born in 1888 followed by Edith (1889) and Annie (1891), all at Canal Side.

In 1891 James was a farm labourer.

Joseph was born in 1893, Harry 1895, Frederick Henry in 1897, Elsie Violet in 1899 and Ellen in 1900.

In 1901 the family was at 2, Canal Side and James was a “horse keeper”.

By 1911 they had moved to 26, Victoria Road. James was a brewer’s labourer. Mary who was working as a charwoman, Joseph and Fred, both also brewer’s labourers, and Elsie, a scholar, were at home.

In June 1921 James and Jane had moved to 26, Victoria Road. James, aged 68, was still a labourer, now working for the Berkhamsted Urban District Council. Daughter Elsie was at home, employed by John Dickinson’s at Apsley Mills.

Jane died at 26, Victoria Road in June 1928, aged 72.

James, who died in 1940, is buried with her.
