John was born in 1884 in or near Bovingdon, but details of his early life have proved impossible to trace.
In 1901 in Berkhamsted he married Annie Louise Gibson, who had been born in Oxfordshire. The couple had five children: William Charles (b.1903), Ellen Caroline (b.1904), twins Alice & Kate (b.1907) and Albert John (b.1908)
In 1911 he was a carter for the UDC and the family lived at 135 High Street.
John died 2 August 1933. Annie survived him until 1947 and was buried here with him.
