John Coombs
1887 –1924

Unmarked grave John Coombs (1888-1924)

John was born in late 1887 or early 1888 in Fovant, Wiltshire, the son of Frank, a labourer, and Sarah Coombs. He was the middle son of three.

By 1901 the family had moved to Donhead St Andrew in Wiltshire where Frank employed on a farm. Tragedy struck the family in 1915 when John’s younger brother Frank jnr. was killed at Gallipoli.

John married Dorothy Evershed, born in Brighton, in late 1920 in Barnet.

Their only child Ronald Frank was born in early 1921 and in June that year the family were living 53, Shrublands Avenue. John was employed by the County Surveyor as a steam lorry

driver repairing roads.

He died in West Herts Hospital aged 36 and was buried 19 April 1924.
