John Willis
1849 –1917

Unmarked grave John Willis (1849-1917) 

John was born in 1849 in Berkhamsted to labourer Thomas J Willis and his wife Mary (née Paxton).

In 1851 he and younger brother James lived with their parents in Back Lane, Berkhamsted.

John never married and in 1871 was living with his parents and brother James, a labourer, at Canal Side. His father was a farrier’s labourer. John was a groom.

In 1891 he was living with his widowed mother, a laundress, brother James and a lodger at Victoria Road. John was employed as a grocer’s porter.

He is recorded in the 1901 census as lodger at 3, Holliday Street, employed as a yardman at a public house.

By at least 2 April 1911 John was an inmate in the Union workhouse, as was his brother James. It is not known whether he remained there for the rest of his life, but he died in the Union Infirmary in February 1917, aged 67.

His father Thomas and his brother James are both buried in this cemetery.
