Biography:
Joshua Everitt
b. 1857
Joshua Everitt
Unmarked grave Joshua Everitt (1857- )
In 1857 Joshua was born in Edwardstone, a small hamlet between Hadleigh and Sudbury in Suffolk. His father William was an agricultural labourer as just about every man and boy in the village was, unless they were farmers. His mother was Harriet and he was the third of her five children.
By the time he was fourteen Joshua had joined his father and older brother Walter as an agricultural labourer – they were probably employed at Grove Farm as they were living in Grove Cottages adjoining it.
Joshua married Anna Sophia Griggs in Edwardstone church 26 November 1865. They set up home in the hamlet and their only child, Arthur James, was born 4 February 1876.
In 1901 Joshua was a “horse man on farm” which was still the case ten years later.
In 1921 the census shows Joshua, by then 64, as a ploughman.
Anna died in 1927 and Joshua went to live with Arthur and his wife at The Carpenter’s Arms, 2, Park Street, Berkhamsted where Arthur was the licensee.
The date of Joshua’s death has not been established. He was 82 at the time of the 1939 Register. Arthur and his wife lie in Plot 1090 in this cemetery.
