Plot 1040 Lilian Maude Scrivener (née Garlick) (1887-1977)

Lilian was born 15 July 1887 Chippenham, Wilts, to George and Martha M (née Taylor) Garlick. Her father was a shoemaker.

In 1901 Lilian was living with her parents and her three brothers and one sister at 56, Parliament Street, Chippenham.

She gave birth to a daughter, Kathleen Ellen, in 1908 in Chipperfield, Herts. Information about Kathleen has proved impossible to find before the 1911 census and her father is unknown.

In 1911 Lilian was employed as a bookbinder at John Dickinson’s paper mills in Apsley and was living with Kathleen as a boarder at 37, Two Waters, in the home of a widow.

She married Alfred Scrivener in Hemel Hempstead register office in 1911 and they went to live at 12, St John’s Road, Boxmoor.

Edith Maud was born in 1912 and Lilian Emily (Lily) in 1914.

Alfred joined the Army 2 September 1914 and was discharged in 1919. He appears to have survived the whole of the 1st World War unscathed.

The family moved to Berkhamsted where Alfred G was born in 1920.

In 1921 Alfred was a general labourer employed by the Berkhamsted Co-Op Society and the family lived at 3, New Street where Gladys was born in 1923. They were still at that address in 1927.

The 1939 Register records them at 105, Gossoms End. Alfred was a water main layer, Alfred jnr. was a joiner at Cooper’s chemical works and Gladys was a “clothing steam presser”, probably for the mantle factory in Lower King’s Road.

Alfred died 16 August 1946 and is buried here.

Lilian died 14 May 1977 aged 89.
