Biography:
Lily Foskett
1874 –1946

Unmarked grave Lily Foskett (née Rance) (1874-1946)

Lily was born in 1874 in Berkhamsted, the daughter of Frederick Rance, a labourer, and his second wife Emma (née Hawkins), and was baptised 5 April.

Her mother must have died soon afterwards as in 1881 the family, consisting of widower Frederick, Lily and her elder brother and younger sister were living in Water Lane. With them were the two children born to Emma Hawkins before her marriage.

In 1901 Lily was living by herself in the High Street and was employed at home as a brush maker.

She married Frank (Francis W)  Foskett, a carpenter, in Berkhamsted 15 February 1903 and by 1911 they had settled in Middle Row, Berkhamsted where their three children Florence Violet Martha (1903), Leslie Edward (1905) and Reginald Francis (1909) were born.

In March 1917, despite being almost 42, Frank enlisted and joined the Royal Flying Corps in November. The surviving records are not helpful in describing where Frank served or in what capacity, but he was transferred to the newly-formed Royal Air Force along with all members of the various airborne military units on 1 April 1918 and was moved to the Reserve in May 1919. He does not appear to have been wounded during his service.

In 1921 the family was living at 12, Middle Row. Frank was working for Cole, builders, in Northchurch, Florrie and Leslie were employed by Cooper’s in Raven’s Lane and Reggie was at school.

Frank died in 1938 and the 1939 Register shows Lily living alone at 58, Shrublands Avenue where she died in 1946.

Her mother-in-law Martha Foskett is buried in plot 921 and her father-in-law Edmond Foskett also lies in this cemetery.
