Mary Margaret was born Mary Margaret Waters Phillips in Berkhamsted on 19th September 1879.  Her father was William Waters Phillips (1851 - 1916) who was born into a family of grocers in Wales.  Her mother was Margaret Chennells (1852-1926) from Berkhamsted. Throughout her life she lived in Highfield Road. In 1881 she was living with her mother, father, maternal grandmother and two maternal aunts.  They were all straw plaiters.  William was a grocer's assistant. By 1891 William had left and Mary Margaret was living with her mother and two aunts.  Here mother is described as a laundress. In 1901 nothing much had changed, she was living at 24 Highfield Road with her mother, one aunt and a cousin. On 31st October 1908 Mary Margaret married Frank Marriott, a brewer's labourer,  who lived at 18 Highfield Road with his two children from his first marriage.  His first wife had been Emily Marriott nee Bartram (1873-1904). Mary Margaret went on to have one child, Alfred Thomas born on 9th February 1910, and raised Frank's two children. Mary Margaret died in 1939.
