Mary Rance
1857 –1901

Unmarked grave Mary Rance (née Chenells) (1858-1901)

Mary was born in 1857 in Berkhamsted to Henry and Sophia Chennells. Her father was a shoemaker. In 1861 the family lived in Great Gaddesden and she had three older and one younger sister. In 1871 the family lived at Potten End Cottage, Great Gaddesden and Mary, like her mother, was a straw plaiter.

Mary married Charles Rance in 1877 in Great Gaddesden.

Sarah was born in 1878 and Annie in 1879.

In 1881 Charles was a painter’s labourer and the family lived in Bridge Street.

Ellen was born in 1881 followed by Ada (1883), Harry (1885), William (1887), Lily (1889), Bert (1891), Frank (1892), Amy (1895), Alice (1897) and Horace (1899).

In 1901 they lived at 1, Kitsbury Road with 9 children. Charles was a general labourer

Mary died in May 1901 at Kitsbury Road aged 43. She is buried in this cemetery

Charles married again in 1907 to Daisy Annie Wilmore, 23 years his junior. Daughter Alice died in 1917 and is buried here with him.

Charles died August 1927 aged 71.
