Biography:
Phoebe Boyes
1895 –1909

Unmarked grave. Phoebe Boyes (1895-1909)

Phoebe was born in 1895, the daughter of John Boyes, the master of the canal boat “King”, and Mary Ann (née Pearsall). John had been born in Wednesbury, the son of a publican, Mary Ann was the daughter of a boatman.

John was a general carrier, transporting whatever loads were available across the canal network of England, so tracing Phoebe’s place of birth or her record in the 1901 census has not been possible.

The burial register records that she died on a “Grand Junction canal boat” and was buried by coroner’s order on 11 October 1909, which might imply that her death was the result of an accident, perhaps a drowning. She was just 14 years old.
