Richard was born c1836 in Berkhamsted to William and Ann Blacknell. His father was a gardener.
By the age of 13, when he was living with his parents in Crouch Field, Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, Richard was already working as a labourer in a saw mill.
He married Ellen Simons in 1857 in Hemel Hempstead where William (1856) and Eliza (1859) were born.
In 1861 the family lived at Ellesmere Road, Berkhamsted.
Clara was born in 1866 and Ellen in 1871, both in Boxmoor.
His wife Ellen died in 1874.
In 1881 Richard was living in Red Lion Yard, Berkhamsted with his two youngest daughters and was employed as a bricklayer’s labourer.
In 1887 he married Maria Dyer, a widow. Maria had two sons and a daughter and by 1891 they were all living in Bridge Street.
In 1901 they were still at 11, Bridge Street with a lodger.
Maria died in August 1912 at 63, Cross Oak Road. She is buried in this cemetery.
Richard died December 1919 in the Union Infirmary.
