Robert was born on 22 March 1877, christened at St Peter’s on 13 May 1877. His parents were Joseph and Mary Ann Rance.

His father died when Robert was very young. In 1881 Mary was a widow and head of the household. The family was living in Charles Street. He had a sister Rose, a year older, and two much older sisters.

In 1891 Robert was 14 and working as a draper’s assistant. He was still living in Charles Street with his mother and sister. His mother had a grocer’s shop and off licence.  In 1901 they were still there – the address given was 53 Charles Street. Robert had become a carpenter, the trade he followed for the rest of his life.

In 1911 Robert had been married to Phoebe for six years. They were living at 53 Charles Street, with their two young children, Lilian age 4 and Henry age 2.

In 1939 Robert was at 56 Charles Street, and living with his daughter Lilian.

Robert died on 26 February 1957: he was still living at 56 Charles Street.
