Plot 765 Sarah Ann Holloway (née Pocock) (1859-1922)
Sarah was born 1859 in Berkhamsted, the first child of Henry James and Sarah (née Putnam) Pocock. She was baptised 13 November that year.
Her father was a blacksmith and her mother a dressmaker and in 1861 the family were living in the High Street. Her sisters Louisa and Matilda were born in 1864 and 1865 and by 1871 they had moved to George Street. Florence was born in 1878 and by 1881 the family was back in the High Street. By then Sarah, aged 22, was a dressmaker and milliner.
She married Hervey Holloway, a house decorator from the large clan of Holloways living in the town. Their daughter Elsie Winifred was born the next year, followed by Wilfred R in 1890. Sarah was employed as a dressmaker.
In 1891 the family were living in the High Street next to the Queen’s Arms in a home of only three rooms. Hervey was employed in the family house decorating firm.
As well as throwing himself into amateur entertainments, Hervey was involved with many activities in the town, and like most of his family, was well-known and popular.
Beatrice was born in 1892 but tragically for the young family Hervey died 31 March 1893 aged only 33. He was buried in plot x227.
Sarah was pregnant and gave birth to Thomas Jeffrey later that year. He was baptised 27 December.
Sarah went to live with her parents at 24, Station Road and carried on her dressmaking business.
Sadly she was to lose daughter Elsie, aged only 19 in 1908. Elsie was buried with her father.
In 1911 Sarah was head of household at 24, Station Road and her widowed mother and her three surviving children.
The 1921 census records Sarah and Beatrice living at 53, High Street where Sarah died aged 62 in 1922.
