Sophia was born 28 September 1882 in Dinton, Bucks, to Thomas and Caroline (née Turnham) Hance. Her father was an agricultural labourer. She was their oldest daughter and second child.
At the time of the 1891 census they were living in Portway Road, Stone, Buckinghamshire.
On 16 December 1900 Sophia married Frederick Josiah Welch in Berkhamsted St Peter’s.
By early 1901 they were living at 4 Holliday Street, Berkhamsted.
The 1911 census records them at 5 Highfield Road, Berkhamsted and by the 1901 census they were living at 4 Holliday Street, Berkhamsted. Frederick was a packer at Cooper’s chemical works.
Ivylene Phyllis was born in 1908. The 1911 census reveals that another infant had died by that date.
In 1911 the family were living at 5 Highfield Road. Frederick was still employed packing sheep dip for Cooper’s.
Frederick fought in WW1 as a gunner but appears to have returned home without serious injury.
In 1921 the family were still at 5, Highfield Road but by the time the 1939 Register were taken they were living at 32, Woodlands Avenue.
Frederick died December 26th 1944, by which time they had moved to “Kenharley”, Lowndes Road, Chesham. He left £2526 (just under £100,000 in 2025).
Sophia died February 23rd 1964 at The Meadows, Highland Road, Amersham. She left £233 to her daughter Ivylene Taylor. (Just over £5,000 in 2025).
