Theophilus was born in Pitstone on 8 September 1847, the fourth child and oldest son of agricultural labourer Robert Gudgin and his wife Ann. Eventually the family would number eight girls and four boys.
Theophilus was baptised in St Peter’s 1 December that year.
By the time Theophilus was thirteen the family had moved to Bedford’s Cottages on Berkhamsted Common and his father was a “labourer in woods”. Theophilus was already working as a farm boy, as was his twelve year old brother. His mother and two oldest sisters were straw plaiters – all very necessary with eight children in the family by then.
In 1871 Theophilus was living at home with the family which had moved to Castle Street. He, his father and younger brother were agricultural labourers and another younger brother was an under-gardener.
On 5 July 1873 Theophilus married Lucy Pocock in St Mary’s, Northchurch and by 1881 they had settled in Raven’s Lane where he had found employment with a brewer as a “beer boiler”. In 1891 he was a brewery labourer.
The couple, who were to have no children, had moved to 15 Raven’s, Lane by 1901 and they would remain there for the rest of his life. Theophilus was, by then, working as a bricklayer’s labourer.
In 1911 he was a “general labourer” and, at the age of 72 in 1921 was still working as a roadman/labourer for the Urban District Council.
Theophilus died in June 1924 at 15, Ravens Lane aged 77. Lucy survived him until 1934 and is buried here with him.
His father Robert and his younger brother William, with his wife Louisa, are buried in this cemetery.
