Thomas Austin (129)
Plot 129 Thomas Austin
Thomas was born in Berkhamsted 9 December 1823, the son of George Austin and his wife Ann (née Powell). His birth was recorded in the registers of the Water Lane Baptist church.
His parents have proved elusive in the records, but George is described as “Timber dealer” on both of Thomas’s wedding certificates.
Thomas married Mary Manton 18 January 1846 at St Bride’s church, Fleet Street. Mary was living close to the church and may have been employed as a servant. On the marriage certificate Thomas is described as a painter.
Their first child, George, was born in Berkhamsted in 1850 and Caroline followed in 1851. By then, as the census shows, Thomas was established in the High Street, Berkhamsted as a plumber, employing several men.
Their second son, Thomas jnr., was born in early 1854 and baptised at St Peter’s in March. Sadly, little Thomas died later that month and his mother survived only until 26 April. Both she and little Thomas are buried here.
Thomas remarried in late 1855. His new wife was Mary Hards, born in Herefordshire and the daughter of a gamekeeper employed in Buckinghamshire.
Their first child, Mary Ann, was born in 1856 but died the next year and is buried in this plot.
Their son Albert Edward was born 20 March 1863.
Thomas’s business appears to have prospered and he remained based in the High Street. He died 13 February 1885 aged 61 and was buried here with his first wife and his infant children on 19 February.
Thomas’s second wife Mary and their son Albert Edward lie in plot 393 and his son George is buried in plot 145 with his wife Mary Ann.
