Thomas Mardle
1863 –1907

Unmarked grave Thomas Mardle (1863-1907)

Thomas was born in early 1863 in Berkhamsted to Daniel and Jane (née Turner) Mardle. He was their second child and first son. His father was a butler born in Welwyn, his mother had been born in Berkshire. Thomas was baptised 8 February 1863.

His father was a butler to widowed Mrs Mary Smith-Dorrien who lived in Haresfoot House and in 1891 the family had moved to a cottage in the park. Thomas was a footman at the big house.

Thomas eventually became a butler like his father and in 1901 worked for Mr Pearson, a retired civil servant who lived with his wife and daughter in Millfield, Northchurch. Thomas, as butler, was the senior servant, supervising the cook, kitchen maid, housemaid and under-housemaid.

Thomas never married and died at 47, High Street in January 1907 aged 44.

His younger brother Arthur and his wife Ada are buried here in Plot 935. His father is also buried in this cemetery.
