Plot 477 Walter George Gent (1882-1941)
Walter was born in 1882 Berkhamsted, the third son of Henry Thomas Gent, a boat builder from Braunton, Northamptonshire and Martha Maria (née Middleton), from Greenhill, Harrow, Middlesex.
In 1901 they had moved to 6, Station Road, Berkhamsted and Walter and his brothers Albert and Henry had joined their father building canal boats. Walter now had nine siblings.
In 1910 in Berkhamsted he married local girl Lucy Eliza Redding, born in Berkhamsted, the daughter of a labourer and their son Walter George Henry was born in 1911.
By 1911 the family had moved to 9, Stoke Road, Linslade, a little terrace cottage just a few yards from the canal. Walter was still employed as a boat builder.
The 1921 census records that they had moved to 58, Stoke Road. Walter was employed by Mr L B Taulkner, “canal carrier” at Linslade wharf.
The advent of the motor lorry was rapidly putting the canal boats out of business and in the 1939 Register Walter and Lucy had moved back to Berkhamsted to 304, High Street. Walter was running a café and tobacconist confectioner’s shop. Living with them was his unmarried sister-in-law Mabel R Redding.
Walter died in January 1941 at 304, High Street aged 58.
Lucy married again to William E Ryan in 1944.
Walter’s parents are buried in this cemetery in plot 924 and his youngest uncle, Arthur William Gent, and his wife, in plot 528. His oldest brother, Henry William, his wife and son lie in plot 925.
