William Joseph Bates

William Joseph Bates (1873-1931)
William was born 21st December 1873 in Potten End, the first child of Joseph and Mary (née Hooker) Bates. Joseph was a general labourer born in Chesham and Mary a straw plaiter from Potten End. William was to be joined by sisters Eliza Jane and Louisa brothers Harry George, James and Edwin.
By 1891 the family had moved to Winkwell, at the extreme western end of Boxmoor. Joseph was working as a gardener and seventeen year old William as a general labourer.
On 13th October 1900 he married Lilian Mildred Higby in Berkhamsted.
By the time of the 1901 census the couple were living at 20, Ravens Lane with Henry’s brother-in-law William Duncombe who had married Eliza Jane Bates. William was a chemical works labourer, very possibly at Cooper’s sheep dip factory in the same street.
In 1906 their only child, Hilda Louisa Nellie, was born.
In 1911 he was still a chemical labourer and he and Lilian had moved to 30, Ellesmere Road
By 1929 they were living at 7, Highfield Road and William died there on 17th July 1931.
Lilian and Hilda moved to Hemel Hempstead at some point after William’s death and Lilian survived him by thirty five years. She was brought back to Berkhamsted to be laid to rest with him here.
