William was born in Rickmansworth in 1819 and baptised there on 27 June that year. He was the son of William and Rebecca Bartlett. William senior was a sawyer and his son followed him into the trade.
In 1851 he was a lodger in the home of William, also a sawyer, and Ann Endersley. He was still there ten years later, when Ann, now widowed, was head of household.
William married Ann Endersley in 1862 in the St Pancras district.
By 1881 the couple were still living in the High Street. William was still employed as a sawyer and they had also taken in four lodgers – a family and a single man.
By 1891, aged 72, his occupation was given as general labourer, presumably because he no longer had the level of fitness required of a sawyer.
William died in January 1901 aged 81 at Provident Place. He was buried 31 January.
