WILLIAM COSTIN: 1818 – 1902
William was born in Berkhamsted in 1818 and was baptised in St Peter’s church on the 14th February 1819. His parents were John and Martha Costin.
In 1846 he married Sarah Buckland who had been born in Dunstable in 1822/23.
In 1851 Wiliam and Sarah were living in Grubbs Lane, now Chesham Road. William was working as a carpenter and Sarah made straw bonnets. The couple were doing well enough to be able to employ a live-in maid. There is no record of William and Sarah having any children.
Sarah died in 1857 at the age of 35. William remarried in 1861. His second wife also named Sarah, was Sarah Potts who had been born in Nettleden. At the time of the 1861 census the couple were living in Grubbs Lane, but 1891 they had moved to Castle Street. Again there is no record of any children.
By 1901, William, then age 82 had retired from his work as a carpenter and he died on 15th March 1902. He was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery with his first wife who had died nearly half a century earlier.
