William was born in 1871 in Kingsfold, Rusper, Sussex to Henry and Adelaide Leadbeater. His father was an agricultural labourer.
In 1881 the family were living in “Dismal Castle” on the Hyde estate just north of Horsham. It was simply a cottage in the woods, originally known as Desmond’s after an earlier inhabitant and turned into Dismal Castle, presumably by locals with a sense of humour. (It was demolished in 1987).
Henry was still an agricultural labourer and 14 year old William was an errand boy and shoe cleaner – perhaps as the “big house”.
William married Kate Agate in 1902 in the Horsham district of Sussex.
Sadly, by 1911, Kate had given birth to four children, only one of whom, Frederick, had survived. In that year they were living in East Street, Billingshurst, Sussex, and William was working as a groom and a gardener.
It was a logical progression, as horse and carriage was replaced by the internal combustion engine, for grooms to learn to drive, and by 1921 William and Kate had moved to 5, Clarence Road where he was employed as chauffeur and gardener for Dr F S Arnold.
William died in March 1925 at 5, Clarence Road, aged 53.
