William became a carpenter and in 1871 was living with his widowed mother and boat builder brother James at the Old Boot, Castle Street where their mother ran a shop and beer house.
In 1882 he married Jane Crook, probably his cousin, in Berkhamsted.
They were to have five children: Ethel Caroline (1883), Frank (1885), Gilbert (1888), Leonard James (1891) and Ernest (1893).
In 1901 the census records William as a joiner, living with the family at 6, Castle Street.
He was still at the same address ten years later but was, by then, an invalid.
He died in January 1919 at 6, Castle Street, aged 65.
