William was born in 1836 in Westminster to John Thomas, a labourer, and his wife Elizabeth. He was their second son. In 1841 they lived in Great Chappell Street, Broadway, Westminster and in 1851 the family lived in York Street, St Margaret’s, Westminster. His father had become a cab driver and William was a warehouse boy.
William married Emily Margaret Grant in 1857 in St Margaret’s, Westminster. She was a minor.
William G was born in 1859, followed by Emily E (1862); James (1865); Eliza J (1867); Fanny (1868); (all Westminster). Julia S (1871) was registered in Clapham and Stanley F (1877), in Battersea.
By 1881 they were living 27, Acanthus Road, Battersea. William was a printer’s warehouseman. Sons William and James were “draughtsman painter decorative designers” and daughter Emily was a “Professor of pianoforte”.
Emily’s date of death has not been traced, but William married for a second time to
Bessie Maria Pride on 25 December 1888, at St Ann’s, Wandsworth.
Susan A was born in 1890 and in 1891 the family was living at 46, St Ann’s Hill, Wandsworth.
Dorothy (1894) was registered in Westminster and Decima Jeanette (1897) in St Pancras.
The 1901 census shows them at 28, Melton Street, St Pancras. Bessie was running a shop.
By 1911 the couple were living in a three roomed cottage at Long Lane Cottages, Bovingdon with Decima. William was out of work.
In June 1921 they were at 2, Thompsons Row, Berkhamsted. William had retired. His last employer was shown as Wyman & Co. Decima, living at home, was a clerk at the Bank of England.
William died in August 1923 aged 88.
