Biography:
William Young
1867 –1925

Unmarked grave William Young (1867-1925)

William was born in 1867 in Northchurch to Anne (née Wilmore) and Michael Young. His father was a labourer, his mother one of the thirteen children of a local gamekeeper. The 1871 census shows William living alone with his mother at Orchard End.

In 1881, at the age of 13, he was living at Marlin Farm, Northchurch and was described as “Servant (Farm.) Dom[estic] indoor.” – presumably involved in everything from cleaning boots to scrubbing vegetables.

He married Minnie Saunders in 1889 by which time he had become a carpenter and joiner. They settled down in Northchurch for a short while – their first child, Annie was born there in 1890 – but by the 1891 census they had moved back to the Chesham area, living at 2, Berkhamsted Road, Chesham. William was a hoop maker, presumably for barrels.

William jnr. was born in 1896 in Chesham, but by 1899 when Nellie was born they were living in Northchurch, In 1901 their address was Orchard End, where William had lived as a child. He was described as a journeyman joiner.

By 1911 Minnie and William had moved to 69, Shrublands Avenue where they remained for the rest of their lives. William was employed at the local sawmills.

The 1921 census shows William as out of work but William jnr. was living at home and employed as a baker at the Co-Op and Nellie was a teller at a Watford firm.

William died in 1925 aged 58. Minnie survived him until 1943 and was buried here with him.
