Plot 585 Stephen Alexander Lusted
Born 1850, Glynde, Sussex, to Stephen and Mary Ann Pettit Lusted. His father was a carpenter.
By 1861 his father had become a wheelwright as well as a carpenter and Stephen was to follow that trade.
In 1877 he married Harriet Holliday, the daughter and sister of Berkhamsted wheelwrights, in the town and joined his brother-in-law George Holliday in the family business.
William was born in 1882, followed by Frederick (1884) and Mary (1885).
Beatrice was born in 1886, but sadly died aged only 2 in October 1888.
Horace was born 1889 and Ethel Caroline in 1891. Tragically Ethel died before her first birthday, the same year as Arthur Stanley was born.
Their last child, David Thomas, was born in 1893 but Harriet died on 4 December that year in Charles Street aged only 36. She is buried in plot 138 with her parents and her two infant daughters.
The 1901 census shows that Stephen had moved back to Glyne, With him were his six surviving children and his unmarried sister Eliza who was probably keeping house for him.. He was continuing his trade as a wheelwright and his two eldest sons, William and Frederick, were working with him.
Ten years later Frederick and Stanley were working with their father as wheelwrights. Also at home were Horace, a land agent’s clerk, and David a sign writer. Eliza was still living with them. The same year William married and Stephen’s occupation was given on the marriage certificate as “Mechanic” – perhaps he was branching out with the coming of the internal combustion engine.
Something prompted a return to Berkhamsted and in 1919 Stephen married again in the town at the age of 67 to Sarah Hawes.
The marriage was to be short-lived and Stephen died at 9, Park Street 21 March 1920
Sarah survived him until 1940 and is buried here with him.
