Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted

National Lottery Heritage Fund LoveParks Week

This week the National Lottery Heritage Fund mark their LoveParks Week with a focus on the Lottery-funded transformation of Rectory Lane Cemetery.

In 2017 the Friends of St Peters received grants totalling £989,200 from The National Lottery through the Parks for People programme. This funding enabled a three-year transformational project to restore a neglected, overgrown Cemetery into a vibrant green space.

The goal of the Rectory Lane Cemetery project was to change perceptions of cemeteries as “dead spaces” and revitalise the many aspects of a cemetery:

  • a place of remembrance to commemorate the lives of loved ones
  • a heritage asset that celebrates the history of the town
  • a rich educational resource
  • a space for promoting health and wellbeing
  • a wildlife haven
