Arthur William Gent (529)

Plot 529 Arthur William Gent (1872-1898)
Arthur was born in 1872 in Islington near the Regent’s Canal, the youngest of the seven children of Henry Gent, boat builder born in Braunston, Northants and Eliza (née Hedgcocks) born Harborne in Staffordshire.
In 1891 he was living in Holiday Street, Berkhamsted with his parents and younger brother, also born in St Luke’s and was employed as a confectioner.
Arthur must have decided to return to close to his birthplace because when he married Berkhamsted girl Lizzie Cook it was in Islington parish church on 7 August 1893. His occupation was “Grocer manager” and he was living at 237, New North Road.
They were to have two children, both born in Islington: Henry Thomas (1896) and Helena Mary (1898).
Tragically Arthur was never to see them grow up and he died 2 May 1898 aged 26 at 56, Cross Street, Islington.
Lizzie returned to Berkhamsted and Arthur was buried here. She survived him until 1952 and lies here with him.
His older brother Henry (born 1856) and buried with his wife Martha in plot 924 had two sons who are also buried in this cemetery: Walter George (plot 477) and Henry William (plot 925 with his wife and son).
