Plot 1001 Elvina Mary Ann Rowe (née Hicks) (1881-1965)

Elvina was born in London 24 April 1881 to Isaac Hicks, a slater, and his wife Elvina, a shirt maker. In April that year she was vaccinated for smallpox.

She married labourer Joseph Rowe in 1899  at St Saviour, Southwark.

Elvina Beatrice was born in 1900 in Croydon, but by 1901 the family was at 3, Bridge Street, Berkhamsted. Joseph was a brewery labourer. Also living with them was his widowed mother and his unmarried sister Beatrice.

Joseph William was born in 1902 followed by Horace Ernest (1904), Alfred Frederick (1906), Violet May (1906) and Frank Frederick (1910).

In 1911 they lived at 17, Highfield Road. Joseph was a brewer’s labourer.

Ethel Louisa was born in 1913, then Doris (1916), James Walter (1918) and Charles David (1920). By the time Bertha P  was born in 1922 they were living at 2, Ravens Lane and Joseph was a labourer employed by Lockhart’s coal merchants.

Joseph died 4 June 1935 at 18, Curtis Way, Berkhamsted, aged 61.

Elvina remained at that address and in the 1939 Register she was living with Doris, who was assisting at home, and Charles and Bertha who both worked for John Dickinson at Apsley Mills.

Elvina died 12 March 1965 and lies here with Joseph.
