Plot 738 Emily Louisa Preston (née Chapman) (1867-1952)

Emily was born 29 January 1867 to Charles and Matilda Chapman and was baptised in St Peter’s 5 August 1870. Her father was a sawyer.

In 1871 the family lived in the High Street and Emily had three older and one younger sister and an older brother.

She was educated at the National School and the school register records that in 1880 she was assisting the school master.

In 1888 Emily married general labourer Henry Ernest Preston. Florence Emily was born in 1890) and Ernest George in 1891, by which time they were living in Ravens Lane.

Arthur Charles arrived in 1893 followed by Annie (1895) and Gertrude Edith (1898). In 1901 the family were at 8, Provident Place.

By 1911 they had moved to 9, Chapel Street and Henry was working as a packer at Cooper’s chemical works. All five children were at home.

In June 1921 they lived at 29, Ravens Lane. Henry had been promoted to foreman at Cooper’s and the children had all left home.

The 1939 Register records the couple at 33b, High Street where Henry died 15 February 1940 aged 70. He left £696 (Just over £33,000 in 2024). He is buried here.

Emily died 1 April 1952.
