Henry was born 5 May 1869 in Victoria Road, Berkhamsted and baptised in St Peter’s in January 1870. His parents were farm labourer George and Ann Preston. He was their second son and third child.
By 1881 the family had moved to Mill Street.
Henry became a general labourer and married Emily Louisa Chapman in 1888. Florence Emily was born in 1890 and Ernest George in 1891 by which time they were living in Ravens Lane.
Arthur Charles was born in 1893 followed by Annie (1895) and Gertrude Edith (1898). In 1901 they were living at 8, Provident Place.
By 1911 they had moved to 9, Chapel Street and Henry was working as a packer at Cooper’s chemical works. All five children were at home.
In June 1921 the couple lived alone at 29, Ravens Lane. Henry had been promoted to foreman at Cooper’s.
The 1939 Register records them at 33b, High Street where Henry died 15 February 1940 aged 70. He left £696 (Just over £33,000 in 2024). Emily survived him until 1952 and is buried here.
His parents are buried in plot x200. Also in this cemetery are his grandfather Daniel Preston and his brothers John George (610) and Daniel (976).
