Emily Preston

Plot 976 Emily Preston (née Weedon) (1857-1935)
Emily was born in 1857 to Joseph and Esther Weedon and was baptised in St Peter’s 12 July. Her father was a brewer’s labourer and in 1871 the family lived in Ravens Lane.
Emily went into domestic service as a cook, but in April 1881 she was out of work and back living with her family. She married brewer’s labourer Daniel Preston in Berkhamsted later that year. They were not to have any children.
In 1891 they were living in Victoria Road. They had a lodger, a drayman who was probably a workmate of Daniel’s.
By 1901 they had moved to 12, Provident Place and Daniel had become a “brewer’s racker.” Their lodger was a stationery engine driver. They were still at that address in 1911. Daniel was a brewer’s labourer again and Emily Ratcliffe, a niece was living with them.
In 1921 the couple were still living at 12, Provident Place. Daniel was working as a garden labourer for a Mrs Dean.
Emily died 1 February 1935 in the Union infirmary aged 77. This was the only free medical facility pre-NHS.
Daniel survived her until 1938 and is buried here with her.
