Plot 976 Daniel Preston (1858-1938)
Daniel was born in 1858 in Boxmoor, the second child of George and Ann Preston. His father was a labourer.
The family had moved back to Berkhamsted by 1860 when his sister Ann was born. The 1861 census records them living in Red Lion Yard, a very insalubrious area off the High Street. His father was an agricultural labourer.
Henry Ernest was born in 1869 and in 1871 they had moved to Victoria Road, a much more healthy area. William Lewis was born in 1873.
By 1881 their situation had improved again. George was a carman – driving a horse-drawn delivery vehicle – and they lived in Mill Street. Daniel, unmarried, was still at home and was a “brewhouse man”.
Daniel married Emily Weedon in Berkhamsted in 1881. They were not to have any children.
In 1891 they were living in Victoria Road. Daniel was a brewer’s labourer and they had a lodger, a drayman who was probably a workmate of Daniel’s.
By 1901 they had moved to 12, Provident Place and Daniel had become a “brewer’s racker.” Their lodger was a stationery engine driver. They were still at that address in 1911. Daniel was a brewer’s labourer again and Emily Ratcliffe, a niece, was living with them.
In 1921 the couple were still living at 12, Provident Place. Daniel was working as a garden labourer for a Mrs Dean.
Emily died 1 February 1935 in the Union infirmary, the only option pre-NHS for anyone unable to afford private medical care. She was 77.
Daniel survived her until 12 April 1938 when he died at 140, Bridgewater Road, aged 80.
