Unmarked grave Francis Meager (1844-1912)

Francis was born 7 April 1844 in Frithsden, Berkhamsted to Thomas and Jane (née Parr) Meager and was baptised in St Peter’s in June. His father had been born in Great Gaddesden, his mother in Petersfield, Hampshire.

In 1851 his father was a beer shop keeper and the family lived in Akeman Street, Tring, but he died when Francis was 11.

Francis became a labourer. He appears to have fathered a daughter, Mary, in 1864, probably with Mary Ann Rogers whom he married in 1866 in Berkhamsted.

Their son Francis was born in 1870 and in 1871 they were living George Street. Two more sons were born: Robert (1875) and James (1878).

In 1881 the family were living in Northchurch and Francis was labouring for a builder.

In 1891 and 1901 the family was recorded in George Street.

At the time of the 1911 census Francis and Mary Ann were at 12, Station Road. Francis was still working as a general labourer. The census that Mary Ann had given birth to 8 children, five of whom had died by 1911.

Francis died May 1912, at 72 George Street, aged 68.

His son James is also buried in this cemetery.
