Frederick Mitchell; 1861– 1907 [534]

Frederick Mitchell is buried with his wife in plot 534 at Rectory Lane Cemetery. He was born in Q1in 1861, in North Hill, Cornwall and was baptised that same year on 18 October 1861 in North Hill.

Frederick was the eldest of 3 children born to Edward and Caroline (nee Dawes) Mitchell. His siblings were called Edward and Emily. From census documents we know that Frederick’s father, Edward, was a farmer and his mother, Caroline (nee Dawes) Mitchell was also listed as a farmer.  Edward’s auntie and uncle (on father’s side) also lived with them along with 3 servants. Frederick’s father Edward died Q2 1887 aged 61.

Two years following the death of his father, Frederick married Ellen Jasper in Q4 1889 aged 21.  Two years after that in 1891, the census shows Frederick and Ellen living in Trewen, Cornwall.  Caroline, Frederick’s mother was living with them. Her death, 2 years later was registered in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. [She is also buried in Rectory Road cemetery]. Caroline was 60 when she died.

From the census information, we can deduce that Frederick, Ellen and Caroline moved to Berkhamsted between 1891 and 1901. There is no documentation that helps confirm the precise year they moved. Their address was 19 High Street, Berkhamsted. The 1901 census data shows they now had two children, Edith and Louisa. Frederick’s wife, Ellen was now was working as a dairy maid in Berkhamsted but we do not know where she worked. Frederick, is listed as a ‘cowman on farm’. We do not know if they worked on the same farm.

Frederick died in 1907, aged 46. Without the death certificate we do not know the cause of his death. However, his death left Ellen looking after their 2 children, now aged 14 and 12. By 1911, the census shows us that Edith, now 18 was working as a cashier and Louisa was a ‘Daily Help’.

By 1939, Ellen, Edith and Louisa were living at 12 High Street (not 19?). Edith continued to work as a cashier (at a drapery store) whilst Louisa worked as a senior invoicing clerk.

Ellen died in 1960, aged 92 - 53 years after the death of her husband in 1907.

There is not sufficient documentation to be absolutely sure, but records show that an ‘Edith Mitchell’ born ‘abt 1892’ had her death registered in St Albans in 1966. She would have been 74. Louisa, born 17 February 1895 died aged 77. Her death was registered in Hemel Hempstead.
