Plot 610 John George Preston (1856-1934)

John was born in 1856 in Hemel Hempstead to George and Ann Preston.

The family moved to Berkhamsted shortly afterwards and John was baptised in St Peter’s 9 November. The 1861 census records the family living in Red Lion Yard, a very insalubrious area off the High Street. George was an agricultural labourer.

By 1871 they had moved to Victoria Road, a much more healthy area.

John became an agricultural labourer and married Louisa Flitney in Berkhamsted in 1878. In 1881 they were living in George Street, Northchurch. Mary Ellen (Nellie) was born in 1884 and Maud Louisa in 1890. By 1891 they were living in Ashlyns Cottages, Charles Street.

In 1901 the family lived at 9, Mill Street and John was “head carter on farm”. And by 1911 they were at 10, Mill Street. John was a “waggoner on farm”.

They were at the same address in 1921 when he was a farm labourer at Ashyns Hall.

John died 28 October 1934 at 124 High Street aged 79. Louisa survived him until 1938 and is buried here.

His grandfather Daniel Preston is buried in this cemetery as are John’s parents (x200) and brothers Daniel (976) and Henry Ernest (738).
