George Preston
Plot x200 George Preston (1835-1899)
George was born in 1835 to Daniel and Amelia Preston. His father was a labourer and in 1841 George; his four siblings; 26 year old Elizabeth Fisher and her three children and another young woman called Mary Adams were all living in one house in Castle Street.
George was baptised in St Peter’s 16 March 1845.
George became a labourer and 28 January 1855 married Ann Dean in Boxmoor parish church. They were both resident in Boxmoor at the time. John signed the register in a very clear and confident hand.
John George was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1856, followed by Daniel in 1858. The family had moved back to Berkhamsted by 1860 when Ann was born. The 1861 census records them living in Red Lion Yard, a very insalubrious area off the High Street. George was an agricultural labourer.
Henry Ernest was born in 1869 and in 1871 they had moved to Victoria Road, a much more pleasant area. William Lewis was born 1873.
By 1881 their situation had improved again. George was a carman – driving a horse-drawn delivery vehicle – and they lived in Mill Street. Unmarried son Daniel was still at home and was a “brewhouse man”. They also had a lodger.
By 1891 George and Ann were living alone in Mill Street and he was, once again, an agricultural labourer. Ann died the following year and is buried here.
George died 18 January 1899 in Provident Place aged 64,
Son Henry is buried in plot 738 and son George in 610.
