Plot 265 Joseph Gilchrist Crossman (1847-1925)

Joseph was born in Clapton in the spring of 1847, the son of Robert and Sarah (née Douglas) Crossman. Robert, born on Holy Island, was a brewer and a Freeman of London, a wealthy man who left over £200,000 when he died in 1883. Joseph was the seventh child and fifth son in their family of three girls and seven sons.

In 1851 the family were living in Walthamstow and employing four live-in servants. By 1861 they occupied an imposing house in Westbourne Terrace, Marylebone. Fourteen year old Joseph was still at school.

Joseph married Mary Fairfax Atkins in Farnham Royal, Bucks, 20 April 1871. His occupation was given as “gentleman farmer” and his residence as Medmenham, a village on the Thames in Buckinghamshire.

Their first son, Alan Fairfax Crossman was born in Medmenham in 1872 and their second child, Arthur, in 1873.

However, it seems that the farm did not prosper and in April 1881 Joseph was recorded at his father’s home, Chiswick House, Ancroft, near Berwick on Tweed with “out of business” in the occupation column against his name.

His father died in 1883.

In 1891 Mary and the two boys were living at 74, Clapham Road, Bedford. Joseph was not at home on census night. They employed a live-in cook and housemaid.

In 1901 Joseph and Mary were living at  37, Kittsbury Road. He was described as “living on own means”. Their unmarried son Alan, a solicitor, was living with them and they employed a live-in cook and housemaid.

In June 1921 the census recorded Joseph and Mary as visitors at the house of a Mrs Prinn in Durham.

Their son Arthur died at the age of 52 at Ghanzi, Bechuanaland (Botswana) in 1923. He is commemorated on the gravestone here.

Joseph died 15 June 1925 at Nutcroft, Cross Oak Road aged 78 and was buried 18 June. Mary survived him until 1927 and is buried with him.
