Mary Austin
Plot 129 Mary Austin (née Manton) (1826-1854)
Mary was born in Northchurch 9 January 1826, the daughter and last child of John and Martha Manton. She was baptised 12 November in St Mary’s.
John was a victualler and innkeeper who died in 1834 and at the time of the 1841 census she was living with her eldest sibling, Martha Mary Muncey, whose husband Thomas Muncey, an innkeeper, had just died of delirium tremens leaving Martha with two very young children.
Mary married Thomas Austin, then a painter, 18 January 1846 at St Bride’s church, Fleet Street. Her address was given as 24, Bride Lane, immediately adjoining the church. It is probable that she was employed in London as a servant.
The couple returned to live at an address in Berkhamsted High Street where Thomas established himself as a plumber and decorator, employing several men. Their first child, George, was born in 1850 and their daughter Caroline in 1851. Both were to marry into the Dwight family of pheasant breeders.
Their second son Thomas was born in early 1854 and baptised 9 March in St Peter’s. Sadly he died later that month. It is possible that his birth may have been the cause of Mary’s death as she passed away 26 April 1854 aged only 28.
Baby Thomas is buried in this plot, as is his father and an infant named Mary who is either the child of this Mary, or Thomas’s second wife, also called Mary. Another infant of Thomas’s second marriage, Mary Ann, also lies here as does Thomas himself.
Mary and Thomas’s son George and his wife Mary Ann are buried in Plot 145.
Thomas’s second wife Mary (née Hards) and their son Albert Edward lie in plot 393.
