William was born in about 1777 in Edlesborough and was baptised there 9 August 1778. He was the son of John Costin and Mary (née Duncombe).

He married Jemima Ellingham in Edlesborough in 1806 and by 1812 they had moved to Berkhamsted where their son Daniel was born that year.

At the time of the 1841 census the couple were living on Berkhamsted Common and William was employed as an agricultural labourer.

Daniel died in 1855 and is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery.

William died 10 January 1858 aged 81. His probate record describes him as a shepherd, living on the Common, and he left an estate of under £100.

Jemima survived him until 1864 and is buried here with him.
