Hon. Capt. E. H. Ballam (late 31st Regt.) served the 2nd V.B. Beds Regt for 22 years. Erected by his brother officers and friends.

Celtic cross headstone inscribed with the Sacred Monogram IHS, based on the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, ΙΗΣΟΥΣ.

The radial inscription around the nimbus is from the Lord’s Prayer:

THY WILL BE DONE

Base inscription:

IN LOVING MEMORY
OF
HON. CAPT. EDWARD HARRIS BALLAM
(LATE 31ST REGT.)
WHO FOR 22 YEARS SERVED IN
2ND V.B. BEDS REGT.
[OBSCURED] 26TH 1905 AGED 57

Base inscription (right side):

SARAH HIS WIFE
DIED JUNE 13TH 1939
AGED 84 YEARS

Condition: good

For many years this plot was overgrown and had become severely damaged by a large, self-seeded ash tree, which had broken the stone kerb around the grave. In 2025 this tree was removed, revealing the front of the headstone for the first time in many decades. The headstone is listing forwards significantly, and part of the base inscription is currently obscured by soil and bramble.
