Plot 810 Mary Alice Chalk (née Barningham) (1857-1946)
Mary was born 5 November 1857, Pendleton, Manchester, to Thomas and Sarah (née Breese) Barningham. She was baptised in Manchester Cathedral 10 January 1858 with her sister Sarah (b. 1855). Her father was a rope and twine manufacturer.
In 1861 the family was living at Fairy Hill House, Fairy Lane, Cheetham. Mary Ann had two older brothers and two older sisters.
By April 1871 her father was trading as a coke merchant and the family were living at 31, Bent Street, Cheetham, Manchester and Mary was still at school. Thomas died later that year and her mother died in 1880.
By April 1891 Mary was living in Middleton St George, a small village outside Darlington Hall. She was occupying the Hall (now part of a retirement village), a substantial brick mansion, and employing a cook and a maid servant. She was “living on her own means”.
She married Walter Chalk, 31 March 1894, in St Mary’s, Marylebone when she was 36 and he was 45. His profession was described as “Merchant”. Mary’s address was given as Sarenholme, Upper Chorlton Road, Manchester. He was living at 28, York Place, Marylebone.
In 1896 they were living at Park Road, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire where their only child, Margaret Alice, was born. In April 1911 the family were at High Kelton, Doctors Commons Road, Berkhamsted. They employed two servants. Walter died 30 May that year and is buried here.
Mary has not been found in the 1921 Census but when the 1939 register was drawn up she was residing at the Edenhurst Hotel, Parkhill Road, Torquay. She was living on private means.
Mary eventually moved to The End House, Hatch End, Middlesex and died 1 February 1946 at the Victoria Nursing Home in Northwood aged 89
