Plot 11 Elizabeth Fisher (née Townsend) (1812-1897)

According to her census returns Elizabeth was born in 1812 in Abingdon.

She married Albert Fisher, a grocer, on 9^th May 1833 at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex, by licence. Both were living in the parish. Their first child, Albert Townsend Fisher, was born in Brighton in 1835 and daughter Ann Noakes Fisher in 1836.

The family moved to Crowland in Lincolnshire, where William Henry was born in 1840, and then on to Thorney in Cambridgeshire by June 1841. Albert was by then employed as an Excise officer. Elizabeth Jane was born later that year. In March 1851 they were living at Church Street, Whittlesea. Albert was described as an Inland Revenue officer.

Ten years later Albert, Elizabeth and Elizabeth Jane were living in the High Street, Berkhamsted. Clearly the Inland Revenue liked to move its officers around – presumably on the same basis that gamekeepers and policemen were, so they did not become too friendly with the locals.

In 1871 Albert, “officer of excise” was living alone in Hockcliffe Road, Leighton Buzzard. Where Elizabeth was living has not been established, but it seems that the couple had separated.

William died in January 1881 in Berkhamsted, possibly at the Castle Street home of daughter Elizabeth Jane who had married John Joseph Hatton, a coal merchant. Elizabeth Jane was granted probate of his will which described him as “Gentleman”, implying that he had retired and was living on his own means.

In April Elizabeth was visiting Miss Emma Bird in Oxford.

Elizabeth died 2 August 1897 in Edmonton aged 85 and was brought here to be buried with Albert.

ALBERT FISHER

Albert Fisher was born 1813 in Wadhurst, Sussex. He was baptised at St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Wadhurst, Sussex.  His parents were: Henry and Anne Fisher.  His father’s occupation in 1813 was a Spirit Merchant.

Albert married Elizabeth Townsend on 9 May 1833 at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex

On the 1851 census, he is living at: Church Street, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, England.  His occupation is Inland Revenue Officer.

On the 1861 census he is living at High Street, Great Berkhamsted, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire.  His occupation is Inland Revenue Officer.

On the 1871 census he is living alone, but still married at: Hockliffe Road, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England.His occupation is listed as an Officer of ExciseHe died on 23rd January 1881 in the Berkhamsted Registration District
