Arthur Goss was born in April 1865 in High St Berkhamsted to Sarah Young and William Goss. His father was a coach wheelwright and his mother a dressmaker. Arthur had 9 siblings, all being born in Berkhamsted. By 1871 the family had moved to Park Street. His father died in 1880 and the family had moved to St John’s Well Lane by 1890.
He married Clara Jane Rance in 1894 in Berkhamsted. By 1901 he and Clara had moved to Cross Oak Road and Arthur working as a self-employed brush maker. Clara was taking in washing. Arthur and Clara then had 2 children and her mother, who was a widow, had moved in with them. By 1911 they had 5 children and were still living in Cross Oak Road, but Arthur had given up his job as a brush maker and was working with his wife and 2 of their children running a laundry from home. Clara’s mother had gone to live with another family member in Chesham.
Arthur died on 19th January 1938 at the age of 72 years.
Clara Jane, née Rance, was born in Chesham Buckinghamshire on 30 December 1872. Her mother’s maiden name was Norwood and this seems to have been incorporated into Clara’s names, Clara Jane Norwood Rance. She was from a large family and had 8 siblings.
She married Arthur Goss in St Peter’s church Berkhamsted in 1894.
Clara worked all her married life and was obviously very enterprising.
