Unmarked grave George Groves (1861-1941)
George was born in 1861 in Berkhamsted, the son of James Groves and his first wife Maria (née Bartrick) who appears to have died giving birth to him. In the census of that year he is listed as a 3 month old “nurse child” in the household of John and Ann Potton in the High Street. John Potton was a tailor. John and Ann’s daughter Ann married James Groves in 1865, but George remained with the Pottons as an “adopted child”.
On 8 May 1868 he was baptised in St Peter’s at the same time as his half-sister Annie Sophia.
In 1881 the census records him as a labourer and a visitor to the Potton’s home.
George married Ellen Rangecroft, born in Winchester, in Berkhamsted 14 August 1886. Ellen had come to the town to work as a domestic servant.
Their first child, Frederick George, was born in 1888 and by 1891 George was a sawyer’s labourer and the family were in Cross Oak Road.
Florence was born in 1892, Mabel in 1894 and Cecil Robert in 1901 when they were at 6, Cross Oak Road. George had become a sawyer.
The 1911 census records that they had had five children born, of which one had died by that year. George and Ellen were living at 5, Charles Street with Frederick and Cecil and George was working in a sawmill.
They were still at 5, Charles Street in 1921. George was out of work, but he had been employed by John Dickinson, the paper manufacturers at Apsley Mills as a timber sawyer. Cecil, who was still at home, worked for the company as a ledger clerk .
They moved to 91, Charles Street where Ellen died in November 1934 aged 71.
George remained at that address and in 1939 was living with his daughter Florence.
He died at home in April 1941 aged 80 and was buried here with Ellen.
His father James and step-mother Ann are buried in this cemetery in plot x198a and it is possible that his mother Maria is the “Mrs Groves” whose grave is also here.
