Unmarked grave Alice Harrowell (née Neal) (1872-1941)
Alice was born in 1872 in Hemel Hempstead to Lucy (née Rose) and John Neal. Her father was a hay dealer and carter born in Grandborough, Bucks. Alice was baptised in St Paul’s Hemel Hempstead 10 October 1873.
By 1881 John Neal was a general dealer and Lucy a straw plaiter. Alice had an older sister and a younger brother. Ten years later John, now back to dealing in hay, Lucy and Alice were living at 2, Union Street, Hemel Hempstead. Alice was a paper mill hand, working for John Dickinson’s at Apsley Mills.
Alice married Alfred Harrowell, a bricklayer from the large Berkhamstead family of builders and bricklayers on 15 August 1896 in St Paul’s, Hemel Hempstead, and the couple settled at 2, Hill Side, Cotterells Hill, Hemel Hempstead, where Fred was born in 1897, Elsie in 1901 and Arthur in 1905.
The family were still at that address in April 1911. 14 year old Fred was employed as a printer at John Dickinson’s paper mill in Apsley and son Dick was born later that year.
The Harrowells moved to Acorn Cottage, Bennetts End, Hemel Hempstead and then to 1, Albion Cottages, Leverstock Green.
Fred joined the Herts Yeomanry, but died 3 October 1918 of malaria. He is commemorated on the Hemel Hempstead war memorial.
The 1921 census shows the family living at 31, Queens Road, Berkhamsted.
In 1926 they suffered two losses – the couple’s daughter Elsie died, aged only 25, a year after her marriage and Alfred’s mother Lizzie passed away.
Alfred died 31 December 1935 at 31, Queens Road, aged 63 and is buried here in an unmarked grave, as is their daughter Elsie Howlett.
In 1939 Alice was still living at 31, Queens Road with her son Dick, a bricklayer, and her unmarried older sister Mary Ann Neal. Also living with them was eight year old Ivy Margaret Dessoy, the daughter of Ernest Dessoy and his wife Violet (née Hardman) – a connection of the Harrowells.
Alice died in November 1941 at Ashridge Hospital aged 69.
